Enhanced Role of Transition Metal Ion Catalysis During In-Cloud Oxidation of SO2

2013

Global sulfate production plays a key role in aerosol radiative forcing; more than half of this production occurs in clouds. We found that sulfur dioxide oxidation catalyzed by natural transition metal ions is the dominant in-cloud oxidation pathway. The pathway was observed to occur primarily on coarse mineral dust, so the sulfate produced will have a short lifetime and little direct or indirect climatic effect. Taking this into account will lead to large changes in estimates of the magnitude and spatial distribution of aerosol forcing. All the technologies under development are based on solid-state electroluminescent materials and belong to the general area of solid-state lighting (SSL). The dinucleating ligand L (1,3-bis[bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino]propan-2-ol) combined with metal ions efficiently cleaves DNA when M : L is 1 : 1 (M = Co(II) or Fe(III)) at pH 5.5–7.0, with free L being more active at acidic pH than when bound to Zn(II), Cu(II) or Ni(II) at neutral pH.

Synthesis and coordination properties of an azamacrocyclic Zn(II) chemosensor containing pendent methylnaphthyl groups

The synthesis of a polyazamacrocycle constituted by two diethylenetriamine bridges functionalized at their central nitrogen with naphth-2-ylmethyl units and interconnected through 2,6-dimethylpyridine spacers (L1) is reported. The protonation behaviour of the new macrocycle in water and in water-ethanol 70/30 v/v mixed solvent has been examined by means of pH-metric, UV-Vis and steady-state fluorescence techniques. Reaction of imidazole aldehydes with dihydrazino derivatives of 2-phenylpyrimidine provides a family of bis(acylhydrazone) ligands which form [2 × 2] metallogrid complexes with transition metal ions including Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II). The free ligands show H-bonding interactions, both donor and acceptor, largely involving the imidazole units, while binding of the metal ions occupies all the acceptor sites and leaves only the pyrrolic-NH site as an H-bond donor, although its deprotonation by a strong base can regenerate an acceptor. Multi-channel receptors based on thiopyrylium functionalised with macrocyclic receptors for the recognition of transition metal cations and anions.

We report herein the synthesis and characterization of a family of ligands containing different cation binding sites covalently connected to a thiopyrylium signalling reporter. The receptors L1–L6 are able to signal the presence of certain metal cations via three different channels; i.e. electrochemically, fluorogenically and chromogenically. An acetonitrile solution of L1–L6 shows a bright blue colour due to a charge-transfer band in the 575–585 nm region. The colour variation in acetonitrile of L1–L6 in the presence of the metal cations Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ has been studied.
